Since 1954, The Arc of Hilo has been a beacon of hope and support for individuals with developmental disabilities on Hawai’i Island. Celebrating their 70th anniversary, they’ve made an incredible impact by providing employment, housing, and community support services to thousands.
One of their proudest achievements is their Career Exploration program, which helps youth with disabilities prepare for jobs after high school. Despite the rural challenges of the Big Island, The Arc of Hilo has been instrumental in overcoming transportation and accessibility obstacles, making a lasting difference in the lives of many.
Their commitment to the community is unwavering. They are driven by their belief that people with disabilities deserve the same rights as everyone else and should be able to live and work happily and healthily.
A particularly inspiring story is that of Onyx, a high school student with disabilities. Onyx was struggling in school, often bored and falling asleep in class, as he only had a couch to sleep on at home. Without intervention, he was likely to remain in high school until the age of 22, without hope of a transition to employment. The Arc of Hilo’s Career Exploration program helped Onyx prepare for employment, and today, Onyx has celebrated two years of successful employment as a landscaper. A month ago, he moved into his own apartment and gained the confidence and self-direction to live independently. Onyx’s story is a testament to the life-changing impact The Arc of Hilo has on its participants.
Looking ahead, The Arc of Hilo is focused on serving hundreds of youths over the next five years and beyond, continuing their legacy of empowerment and community support.
